What We Believe

First Evangelical Lutheran Church is a member of The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. Our Bible-based teachings are drawn from the Reformation tradition of Martin Luther and the Book of Concord.

We believe in the Triune God: the Father, creator and sustainer of all that exists; Jesus Christ, the Son, who became human to suffer and die for the sins of all human beings and to rise to life again in the ultimate victory over death and Satan; and the Holy Spirit, who creates faith through God's Word and Sacraments. The three persons of the Trinity are coequal and coeternal, one God.

Grace Alone

God loves the people of the world, even though they are sinful, rebel against Him and do not deserve His love. He sent Jesus, His Son, to love the unlovable and save the ungodly.

Faith Alone

By His suffering and death as the substitute for all people of all time, Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. Those who hear this Good News and believe it have the eternal life that it offers. God creates faith in Christ and gives people forgiveness through Him.

Scripture Alone

The Bible is God's inerrant and infallible Word, in which He reveals His Law and His Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. It is the sole rule and norm for Christian doctrine. To learn more specifically what we teach and preach, our doctrine, we invite you to view the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod's website, which explains in detail what we believe.

We Believe…

On the basis of the Holy Scriptures we believe the article of the Holy Trinity; that is, we believe that the one true god is the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit—One God in Three Persons.

According to the Holy Scriptures, God is perfect and holy. He created humanity perfect and holy, too, but our parents sinned bringing death into the world and separation from our just and holy God.

Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, took on human flesh and was the only one to live without sin, perfectly keeping all the commands of God the Father. He willingly suffered and died on the cross to pay the penalty for the sins of all people. His sacrifice on our behalf unites all believers to God the Father. Jesus physically, bodily rose from the dead on the third day.

Christ now rules in heaven as King of Kings. On the Last Day, He will return to earth, raise the dead, and give believers eternal life and all others eternal punishment in hell.

God the Holy Spirit works through the means of grace to create and sustain faith in us. The means of grace are:

  • Thew Word of God, including Holy Scripture, through which the Holy Spirit guides and teaches us.

  • Holy Baptism through which we are adopted into the family of God and united with Christ.

  • The Lord’s Supper in which Christ gives us his body and blood to eat and drink for the forgiveness of sins.

  • Confession and Absolution in which the pastor delivers the forgiveness of sins won by Christ on the cross.

We believe all human life from conception to natural death is sacred, precious, and to be protected. According to the Scriptures, the basis of the family is the life-long marriage of a man and a woman, therefore sex outside of marriage, homosexuality, and cohabitation are against God’s will.

Christians are called to live their faith through deeds of love toward others and to tell people that the only way to salvation is by faith in Jesus Christ.

    PASTOR

I began my work at First Lutheran Church in November 2021, having served churches in the Chicago area for my first 13 years of ministry. After graduating from Concordia University Wisconsin, I married my wife Kristan in 2003. We both moved to St. Louis where I attended Concordia Seminary before being placed in Chicago. I am excited about the opportunity to serve both the congregation and the El Cajon community. I love to help others see the beauty and grace of Jesus Christ as seen through the teachings of the Lutheran Church to give them the comfort and peace only Jesus can give. In my free time, I enjoy photography, researching Lutheran history, writing, and cooking.

    OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR

I'm an East County native who has seen many changes in our community through the years. The majority of my career was spent in banking, though I've also worked as a preschool teacher and in a few other fields before landing at FLC in 2008. My position here includes admin and finance, and everything else I can squeeze in between! In many ways my position here is the most challenging I have ever had, but also the most rewarding. We have a great, caring membership at FLC that makes it a pleasure to serve and worship with.

    CHILDREN, YOUTH, AND COLLEGE MINISTRY

I am the Children/Youth Director for First Lutheran Church. I have worked in Children’s Ministries at First Lutheran Church since 2003. Before working as a staff member, I volunteered here as a Sunday school teacher, and with VBS and Easter Celebration events. I enjoy watching the children grow up and seeing their relationship with Jesus grow deeper and deeper. I started working as a youth worker at First Lutheran Church in 2014 and have loved it ever since. It is so exciting working with kids that I have known since they were born. I love the new ideas and refreshing ways they grow in their relationship with God. My motivation here is for God to help me direct the kids to Him, help them focus on their personal relationship with Him-if they have one, and, if not, to get to know Jesus as their personal savior.
